Approach

Gurukul The School believes in learning, not teaching. We intend to provide an environment which rekindles the innate sense of inquiry present in every child. Freedom to the child to question everything and to develop one’s own logical understanding makes learning meaningful and relevant. We believe that nothing can be taught rather learning happens only through experiences. When children are left to experience, they develop their own understanding and construct their own knowledge. This not only makes them internalize the learning but also skills them in applying the knowledge. This way students become the center of whole education process and develops the life-long love for learning which takes the children onto the path of developing their own unique potential.

Based on our vision and mission of education we drafted GPEP (Gurukul Progressive Education Programme). GPEP is an experiential learning based curriculum. Through GPEP education is facilitated using pedagogy developed from within the child’s world. GPEP gives equal importance to art and craft, music, dance, theatre and sports to encourage creative thinking and expression. The experiences at Gurukul facilitate the development of all faculties in child and encourage skill development in a very free and natural manner so that learning happens in atmosphere of care and respect where child grows with full understanding of the situation, surrounding and self and does not conform to any externally imposed standards.

Our Guiding Principles

Child-Sensitive Pedagogy

Celebration of Self-Expression

Fearless and Joyful Atmosphere

Sensitive, Purposeful and Integrated Learning

Equal Weightage to Curricular and Co-Curricular Domain

Child-Sensitive Pedagogy

The focus is on developing pedagogical practices on the basis child’s psychology. Based on age-specific needs of children, conditions are created where children learn in a non-threatening atmosphere and in a very natural manner by exploring their own innate sense of learning. Freedom to explore and experiment with age-appropriate need based learning aids facilitate discovery of knowledge by the students themselves. This ensures that nothing is imposed and everything that is learnt is internalized and stays with the child forever as a skill.

Celebration of Self-Expression

Each child’s freedom of expression is respected and there is no fear of being judged or labeled. Opportunities of self-expression helps in knowing one’s own self as well as others better. This freedom of expression develops positive view of self and improves decision making ability. Exchange of expressions leads to exchange of thoughts and ideas and promotes peer learning. It also fosters respect for difference of opinion and makes children more accommodative.

Fearless and Joyful Atmosphere

Fearless and joyful atmosphere is important prerogative for children to learn. This atmosphere includes both physical set up psychological and emotional setup. It helps in enhancing learning outcomes manifold. Fearless and joyful atmosphere creates an informal and non-threatening atmosphere for learning where students feel free to explore, express and choose without any fear. This helps not only in exploring the inner self but also in expanding in the outer world.

Sensitive, Purposeful and Integrated Learning

It is important for learners to know the relevance of whatever is being learnt and find its application in real life. Learning without any sensitivity is incomplete and lacks purpose. Further, concepts do not exist in watertight compartments of various disciplines rather they find connections and applications across the disciplines. Thus, it is essential to make learning sensitive, purposeful and integrated so that students are aware of what are they learning and why are they learning.

Equal Weightage to Curricular and Co-Curricular Domain

Co-curricular activities help in achievement of objectives of both curricular and co-curricular domains. Enough exposure to curricular and co-curricular activities is very important for education to achieve its aim of all-round development of child. The fine balance between the two brings about physical development, aesthetic development, character building, enhanced concentration, development of sense of responsibility and inculcation of social and civic values. This is how a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Through GPEP, due care is taken that every day both curricular and co-curricular activities find deserving place in child’s schedule. Proper monitoring and recording of learning outcomes of these activities is done to ensure that all round development of child is very well taken care of.
